Word of Mouth vs Listings

I’ve always leaned on word of mouth when hiring someone local, mostly because it feels safer hearing it straight from a friend. But lately my circle doesn’t always have recommendations for more specific services, and I end up checking online listings anyway. I’m curious how others balance the two. Do you still trust personal recommendations more, or have online local listings caught up in terms of reliability?

I see them as kind of complementary now. Word of mouth is great when it comes from someone you trust, but it’s also limited to who they’ve personally dealt with. Online local listings help fill in those gaps. I like using fraser valley local because it focuses on nearby businesses instead of pushing big brands. I’ll often start there, then ask around to see if anyone’s heard of the same company. When both line up, I feel way more confident.
